The Interfleet UK team has been selected by Serco & Caledonian Sleepers Rail Leasing Ltd to project manage the design, build and introduction of 75 new sleeper coaches that will be manufactured by CAF.
Interfleet’s role in the project will be to manage all contractual and commercial activities, undertake design reviews, provide on-site resident engineering, witness tests and undertake maintenance readiness audits.
Magnus Conn, Rolling Stock Director for Interfleet UK, said: “We are delighted to have been selected for this high profile contract for a franchise which will provide business and leisure travellers with a premium service. The Caledonian Sleeper services are a key part of the transport network and we’re excited to be supporting both Serco and Lombard in transforming this iconic rail service for Transport Scotland.”
Transport Scotland has selected Serco to operate ‘all aspects’ of the service. The franchise involves the operation of overnight passenger services between London Euston and each of Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness, Aberdeen and Fort William. The project is being funded with £60M from the Scottish Government, with additional financing provided by Caledonian Sleepers Rail Leasing Ltd, a subsidiary of Lombard North Central Plc.
The franchise is scheduled to commence in April 2015 with new rolling stock being introduced into service in April 2018.  There will be five different types of sleeper, formed into four trains of 16 coaches, plus 11 spare coaches for the franchise, operating the Highland and Lowland services.
