As part of the transition from project delivery into the maintenance phase of the new moving block Communication Based Train Control (CBTC) ATO signalling system on London’s Northern Line (NL), SNC-Lavalin was engaged by the NL Fleet team within London Underground’s Asset Protection Directorate (APD) to provide technical expertise, guidance and training in order to accelerate their reliability growth programme.

SNC-Lavalin was tasked with assessing fleet maintainers for their CBTC system understanding and diagnostic skills, prior to proposing and delivering improvements in support and training materials as well as top-up training in the system, normal and failure modes and the use of key diagnostic tools.

Using the supplier’s CBTC simulators and by supplementing the existing training material, SNC-Lavalin carried out formal group and one-to-one technical tutorials, with the aim of improving fleet maintenance response times as well as reducing the impact of service affecting failures and mean-time-to-repair times.

Project Activities

  • Supplying independent expert advice on current first and second line maintenance activities to enable technical and operational issues to be identified and remedied sooner
  • Providing in-depth CBTC knowledge to enable fundamental system functions to be identified and explained, in part using simulators and typical operating scenarios
  • Supporting the development of the fleet reliability growth management plan, with recommendations for longer-term strengthening of fleet maintenance capabilities and technical competency
Benefits

As a result of this additional support, LU fleet maintainers and their managers were able to gain a much better understanding of the CBTC system, in particular relating to the inter-relationship of the central and trainborne subsystems and the typical CBTC issues that affect fleet performance and reliability. This allowed them to better identify, plan and prioritise specific actions and initiatives to improve system reliability and also ready the fleet for more demanding availability targets associated with new timetables and the need for more trains in service.
