Client: Rail Safety and Standards Board (RSSB)

Year: 2014

The Rail Safety and Standards Board (RSSB) established a research programme to promote the sharing of asset status data obtained from remote condition across the GB rail industry, with a view to obtaining the maximum benefits at an industry wide level. It was recognised that the lack of an established commercial framework for such sharing of data was holding back this initiative.

RSSB engaged SNC-Lavalin Transport Advisory due to our commercial expertise in the rail industry combined with technical understanding of Rail Condition Monitoring (RCM) from our sister company SNC-Lavalin Rail & Transit.

SNC-Lavalin provided RSSB with three key deliverables based on extensive industry consultation and on in-depth case studies. These were a set of business process maps which provide an exemplar of best practice in cross-industry RCM initiatives, a commercial principles document that sets out in non-legal terms the scope and principles that should be applied. Finally a commercial template agreement was prepared for us by legal firm Stephenson Harwood.

SNC-Lavalin's depth of expertise, professionalism and ability to draw stakeholders together has resulted in template agreement, and guidelines for its use, that will help the rail industry more fully exploit the gains in efficiency and performance that cross-industry RCM initiatives can bring.
