Client: Network Rail

Year: 2014

Network Rail, the UK railway infrastructure owner, is spending £9bn on electrifying hundreds of miles of railway. Large parts of the UK rail network are either entirely unelectrified or operate on life-expired or out dated traction infrastructure.
As part of the National Electrification Programme (NEP) SNC-Lavalin has been engaged on three distinct packages of work for both the ultimate client (Network Rail) and its supply chain.

  • Midland Mainline Electrification, Bedford to St Pancras – SNC-Lavalin undertook an extensive feasibility and capital costing exercise analysing existing near life expired overhead line equipment (OLE) identifying options for upgrade or replacement of kit.
  • West Coast Power Supply Upgrade – SNC-Lavalin undertook detailed design for the ABC consortium to faciliate an upgrade in the auto transformer feeder (ATF) kit on existing OLE infrastructure to allow the use of more modern trains.
  • Great Western Electrification Programme – SNC-Lavalin has been appointed to the lead design organisation which entails the installation of brand new OLE between London and Wales.

For the Midland Mainline package SNC-Lavalin's feasibility analysis and costings were so comprehensive they allowed the project team to obtain authorisation for further development from the Network Rail Board.

SNC-Lavalin's survey team undertook a laser sweep survey on the West Coast Power Supply Upgrade package which provided a full 3d cloud model of the track and infrastructure. This approach eliminated the need for costly site revisits and underpinned the design.

Project Activities

On Midland Mainline Interfleet undertook a feasibility study analysing and costing three different options regarding the existing OLE infrastructure and its upgrade or replacement.

For West Coast Power Supply Upgrade SNC-Lavalin produced detailed design within tight timescales to allow the implementation of the ATF wire within the client’s programme.

For Great Western Electrification SNC-Lavalin is working alongside Atkins, Parsons Brinckerhoff, and Balfour Beatty Rail. SNC-Lavalin is undertaking both reference and detailed design for the line of route from Didcot to Oxford which will be the first into service and the first live section of the national Intercity Express Programme.
