SNC-Lavalin was employed by Wabtec Rail Ltd to produce the engineering design, provide installation support and specialist engineering assistance and secure vehicle acceptance for the refurbishment of eleven High Speed Train Sets for the East Coast Mainline.
Apart from increasing the service life of the vehicles, the aspiration behind the refurbishment was to continue the interior appearance and ambience of the successful Mallard Mk 4 fleet through into these additional train sets, thus creating a single corporate travel environment for both vehicle types. (SNC-Lavalin Rail & Transit
provided project engineering and resident engineering support during the Mallard Mk4 refurbishment).
SNC-Lavalin's industrial design team produced a series of visuals to promote discussion and allow review of the interior designs by all involved parties. These were invaluable in providing GNER with real insight into the final design and as a design tool to highlight issues and identify solutions. As part of the overall design management, SNC-Lavalin developed and co-ordinated a clear design process to allow both Wabtec and the operator to input into the design throughout its development. This ensured that the Interfleet
scope for the design was delivered to the clients’ satisfaction, fully compliant, and within Wabtec’s tight timescale. The design scope included:
- Redesign of the saloon centre lighting module.
- Development of revised seating and table layout.
- Production of a new schedule of interiors finishes.
- Installation design for a universal access toilet.
- Refresh for the vestibules and standard toilets
In addition to the above activities, SNC-Lavalin provided expert guidance and assistance in the repair of corrosion and ongoing support on all technical issues as they arose.
This project utilised the broad range of skills and capabilities within SNC-Lavalin to provide a complete design and installation support service and thereby ensuring the success of this high profile project.
