Led by Network Rail, the GSM-R project is the biggest telecoms project undertaken on Britain’s railway, providing a vital upgrade to driver-signal radio communications systems. This provided a cost efficient digital replacement for existing analogue radio networks.

SNC-Lavalin Rail & Transit was asked to provide a project engineering resource to cover the role of Designated Project Engineer (DPE) for the National GSM-R Cab Mobile Programme.

Project Activities

  • Providing the Train Operating Company (TOC) and Rolling Stock Operating Company (ROSCO) with engineering support, working with fleet and depot engineers to progress engineering change
  • Managing First of Class installation, as-built drawing and configuration management processes, ensuring lessons learnt are fed into future installations
  • Undertaking design reviews and the verification process managed for designs and any subsequent modifications
  • Problem solving and fault finding through desktop exercises and on-site investigations

Benefits

Implementing GSM-R on the UK rail network is a key enabler to the national strategy to deploy ERTMS. It also provides much needed enhancements to voice and data communications capabilities and addresses many of the UK accident rail enquiries regarding signaller to driver communications.

Through engaging the SNC-Lavalin team on this project Network Rail has gained a vital combination of rail telecoms expertise and extensive knowledge and experience of managing major cross-industry rolling stock systems fitment and modification programmes.
