Client: Heathrow Express

Year: 2012

Fourteen four and five-car Class 332 EMU’s operated by Heathrow Express between London Paddington and Heathrow Airport underwent a major interior refurbishment and associated modernisation works to specifications and designs developed by us.

The refurbishment enhanced passenger comfort and provided a colour scheme in line with the re-branding of the Heathrow Express service timed to coincide with the London 2012 Olympic Games. This was also reflected in a new exterior livery.

The refurbishment encompassed new vehicle interiors, comprising re-trimmed seats, new saloon and vestibule ceiling lighting, ‘at-seat’ power for both First and Express Class seats, reading lights in First Class, new tables and cup holders. The modernisation works included the installation of new traction cables. The provision of a Checked Luggage Area on some driving vehicles was removed, to make all DSC vehicles a First Class seated saloon only.

Our support comprised industrial design concepts, installation and detail drawings, site support for the First of Class unit and the provision of technical support for the major systems upgrades (passenger information and customer Information systems).

Our knowledge of passenger interior safety requirements was also relevant as SNC-Lavalin undertook the Vehicle Acceptance Body approvals for the units, resulting in the issue of Engineering Acceptance certificates for the completed units.

An assessment was also undertaken and a Letter of Assurance provided for compliance with the requirements of the Technical Specification for Interoperability – Persons of Reduced Mobility (TSI-PRM), to cover modifications to the saloons, toilet and the installation of two adjacent wheelchair spaces.
